(episode
written by Joss Whedon & David Greenwalt,
directed by Joss Whedon)
Angel
is sat at a bar, drunkedly talking about 'Buffy',
a bald coloured man is sat next to him. A young
man comes over to the bar and stands beside
Angel, he asks the bar tender to exchange
something for cash, Angel comments to the man
that the ladies they are with are very pretty,
but Angel is ignored. The young man, his friend
and the girls leave the bar. Angel becomes alert,
he swings round off his stool and follows them
out of the bar, his long coat gently billowing
from his haste. He goes into the ally, just as
the men turn into vampires and are about to make
their kill. Angel acts drunk and asks if they've
seen his car, 'it's all shiney'... one of the
vampires moves in on him and Angel goes into
action. There is a third vampire, but none are a
match for Angel. He dispatches two as they charge
at him from both sides, a wooden stake appearing
from each of his coat sleeves. The third attacks
again and Angel gets hurt, in anger and pain he
shows his vampire face, throwing the third
vampire onto the bonnet of a nearby car. One of
the young women goes closer to thank him, she is
injured, a cut on her forehead, bleeding. Angel
tells her to get away from him, she backs off, he
turns and snaps a piece of wood from a nearby
crate and rams it into the heart of the
unconsious vampire, turning him to dust. Angel
vanishes into the shadows of the ally....
Angel
enters an oldish building with large double
doors, he heads down a stair case, balconied
either side, and unlocks an office door a few
yards further on. He goes through a couple of
offices to a cage lift and heads down into the
basement apartment. Angel takes off his coat and
removes some devices stapped to his arms. He
becomes aware of not being alone. An Irishman
comes forward out of the shadows and comments on
the cosy 'bat cave' Angel has. Angel can 'smell'
that the intruder is not human, and when he
sneezes, it's obvious he is not. His name is
Doyle and he begins to tell the story of this
vampire, who was evil, and then had his soul
restored after killing a gypsy girl. Then there
was the inevitable falling in love bit, with the
vampire slayer of all people, and the loss of his
soul. Then the vampire gets his soul back a
second time, but has to leave the slayer in case
things got too friendly again. Angel is not
impressed and wants to know why Doyle is there.
As Angel has no beer in the fridge they head out
for Doyle to get a drink and Doyle explains what
he can as they walk back. Doyle gets these
visions, or splitting migraines with images. He
doesn't know who is sending them exactly, but
there must be a reason. Doyle is just the
messenger, and it's Angels job to go and 'save
the souls' of whoever the visions say need help.
The first is a girl called Tina.
Angel
is sat alone at a table in the coffee bar where
Tina works, sipping a cup of coffee. He watches
her, and when she comes over to clear the next
table he tries to strike up conversation. He asks
her if she's happy, and eventually, after an
awkward start to the conversation Tina agrees to
meet him after she finishes work.
Tina
walks towards where Angel is waiting, she is
dressed up for a party. Angel comments that he
feels a little underdressed, only to have a small
spray can held at his face. Tina thinks he's
working for someone called Russell, but Angel
manages to persuade her he is not and offers to
give her a lift to wherever she is going. Angel
drives her to the party, and goes in with her as
chaperone. While Tina goes off to talk to the
hostess to try to get some money she is owed, to
get a ticket home, Angel wanders around the
party. He recognises a voice, it's Cordelia
Chase. He goes over and says hello, she asks if
he is still 'Grrr'. They exchange some small talk
and Cordelia makes some comment about her
'networking' to get her acting career off the
ground, before heading off into the crowd. Angel
makes the comment 'it's nice to see she's grown
as a person' in a very sarcastic way as he heads
off in the other direction. He is stopped by a
manager who gives him his card and tells him to
call.
When
he finds Tina, she is being harrassed by a man.
She breaks free of him and goes over to Angel. He
enquires as to his identity and she tells him his
name is Stacy. They leave the party. As they exit
the lift into the car park two men grab Angel and
push him back into the lift, while another grabs
Tina. Stacy exits the other lift. They force Tina
into a car and start to drive off, just as Angel
gets out of the lift. He runs across the car park
and jumps into the open top car and goes to
switch the ignition on, but no keys? He looks
across the car park, and there is another open
top car of the same make... (oops wrong car!) He
gets in the right car and manages to get to a
point where he is heading straight towards
Stacy's car. The other car swerves at the last
minute and crashes into one of the parked cars.
The driver gets out and points a gun at Angel, he
slams the door on the driver and takes the gun
off him, pointing it at Stacy. He tells Tina to
get in the car. Stacy comments that Angel won't
shoot.. Angel hits Stacy and agrees with him in
retrospect. Angel and Tina drive off.
Back
at Angel's, Tina has changed out of her party
gear, and says that she could survive out of a
bag for ages, due to her girl scout training.
Angel asks if she takes milk or sugar with her
tea, which she answers yes, because he doesn't
have those things. He brings the tea through to
her and she asks if this is the point at which he
'comforts' her. Angel declines and says this is
the point at which she has a safe place to stay.
Tina breaks down and starts to cry, Angel fetches
her a towel from the kitchen area.
While
Tina sleeps, Angel breaks into the local library
and starts to research on a missing friend of
Tina's. He finds details of a girl murdered who
matches her description, with a tattoo of a rose
on her shoulder. As he nears the trap door
leading from the tunnels into his apartment he
hears Tina distressed. Angel dashes up the ladder
just as Tina wakes from a nightmare. She throws
her arms around his neck for comfort, and he
reluctantly hugs her. When she's calmed down
Angel tells her he thinks her friend was murdered
and asks about the tattoo. Her friend did have
the same tattoo. Tina notices a bit of paper on
the floor, with her name on it. She panics,
thinking that it's all a trap and that Angel is
working for Russell after all, and she grabs her
bag and runs upstairs to the front door. Angel
follows her trying to explain, without
explaining. He grabs her as she reaches the door,
but she pulls his hand into the sunlight as she
tries to get away from him. Angels hand busts
into flames briefly and he shows his vampire
face. A startled Tina runs out into the daylight.
She
grabs a case from by her bed and starts to pack,
fighting back the tears and fear. There is a gun
in the top draw. Tina swings round and points the
gun at a man now stood in front of her. Russell
Winters. He persuades her that he only wants to
help her, and asks what she wants. She says she
wants to go home. Tina tells him about Angel,
about how he changed. Russell then shows his true
face, a vampire, and bites into her neck. When
Angel arrives it's too late, she is already dead.
He watches from the building opposite as the
police bag up her body.
Angel
returns to his apartment, with Doyle, and they
start to research. Check for the damaged car,
find the driver, the driver leads them to Stacy,
Stacy leads them to Russell, then Angel will
express how he feels about Tina being killed...
...
Russell Winters is watching the video of the
party that Tina and Angel went to. He comments to
the young lawyer stood behind him that it was a
shame to have to kill her. The lawyer recites
back a timetable that gives Winters a watertight
alibi, just in case. Then Winters notices a new
face on the video, it's Cordelia. He decides he
wants to meet her, but only because he's
hungry...
...
Cordelia is sitting on the opened sofa bed in her
downtown apartment. It's poorly decorated, and
not particularly spacious, or well kitted out.
Cordelia is broke. She is meditating, trying to
draw on her positive energy to make people like
her and help her with her career as an actress,
and to stop her thinking about food, of which she
has very little. The phone rings and she darts
across the room to answer it. It's Margo, the
hostess from the party. She tells Cordelia that a
financier, Mr Winters, wants to meet her, after
seeing her in the video. A limo will collect her
later...
...
The window shatters to the floor at Stacy's gym.
Angel pins him down and demands to know where to
find Winters. Stacy warns him that he'll kill
everyone Angel cares about, but Angel states that
there is no-one...
...
Cordelia is pleased with herself, and her
positive energy, as she travels to her hosts home
in his limo. The house is huge, an elaborate
mansion and estate. Cordelia compliments Winters
on his home, and comments on the heavy, dark
curtains in his study, adding that she was raised
in a nice home, though not as nice as his, but
they did have a couple of rooms that they didn't
know what they were for...
...
Angel gathers his various weapons and a rope, and
insists Doyle comes along, which Doyle isn't too
happy about. When they get to the mansion Angel
goes to the gatehouse saying something about
being lost and asking about the game on TV, then
he hits the guard and rips the wire from the
security camera. He tells Doyle if he's not out
in ten minutes, then he's not coming out at all,
and heads off over the wall into the estate...
...
Winters asks Cordelia how her career is going.
She tells him, not too good. He says he wants to
help her, and she asks what he wants her to do.
Cordelia starts to get a bit weepy and gets up to
go to a mirror to check her make-up, but there
are no mirrors... no mirrors? heavy dark
curtains? She comes to the conclusion he must be
a vampire and confronts him, declaring 'we have
our own hellmouth in Sunnydale' so she knows a
vampire when she meets one... he denys the charge
and Cordelia makes an excuse about being
lightheaded from hunger. Winters then says he's
glad she knows...
...
Angel attaches a small device to the main power
supply and heads into the house, via the first
floor...
...
Cordelia runs out of the study and heads up the
flight of stairs to the first floor, with Winters
close behind. She hesitates at the top, not
knowing which way to go and Winters grabs her.
Just as he's about to bite her neck the lights go
out, and a voice from the shadows calls out
Winters name. Cordelia backs away from Winters,
recognising the voice as Angel's, and
questioningly calls back his name. Angel steps
forward from the shadows and walks towards
Winters, declaring he has a message for him from
Tina. Winters is unimpressed by the intruder.
'You
don't know who he is do you.... oh are you about
to get your arse kicked...' Cordelia grins, as
she backs away a little further. Angel and
Winters fight, and are fairly evenly matched.
Winters henchmen come up the stairs, Angel pulls
a rug from under Winters and he tumbles back. The
henchmen start to shoot at Angel, and he takes a
number of bullets. He scoops up Cordelia and
jumps off the balcony, Cordelia letting out a
small scream on the way down. They land safely
and head for the door.
Doyle
hears the gun shots and decides it's time to
leave, he backs the car off the entrance and
starts to head away. He curses to himself, turns
the car around and heads at speed towards the
gates. The car comes to a halt, the gates don't
budge. When Angel and Cordelia get there Doyle
has backed the car away from the gates, but the
engine is smoking a little bit. The car still
goes and they climb in and drive off down the
road.
Back
at Angel's, whilst Doyle is 'digging' the bullets
out of him, the trio come to the conclusion that
Cordelia will not be safe as long as Winters is
alive. Once Angel has recovered enough from his
injuries he heads into the tunnels and makes his
way to the boardroom at Russell Winters
headquarters. Winters, some colleagues and the
young lawyer from before are all in a meeting.
The lawyer mentions that they have not had much
luck tracking down information on his intruder
but they have private investigators working on
it. Angel walks into the room, and heads towards
Winters. The lawyer gets up from his chair and
blocks Angels route. He hands Angel a business
card and states that Mr Winters has never been
accused or convicted of any crimes etc, etc, and
if Angel causes any more trouble he would be
brought 'into the light of day'. Angel ignores
him and walks passed to were Winters is sitting.
Winters declares that he pays his taxes, keeps a
low public profile, etc, etc, and in return he
can do whatever he likes... Angel moves forward
slightly and places a foot on Winters chair, he
then asks Winters if he can fly, pushing the
wheeled chair with one hard shove towards the
window. The momentum crashes the chair, with
Winters, through the window of the highrise
office block, into the light of day... a body
does not reach the ground, only ashes and the
chair...
Angel
is not convinced that killing Winters, a vampire,
had really achieved helping too many people.
Doyle points out that their is a very happy young
lady upstairs... they hear a scream... when they
get to the offices Cordelia complains that their
is a cockroach, a huge cockroach. They should
call in the exterminators... and get the offices
into shape if they are going to be running a
business. Angel looks a little baffled. Cordelia
continues on about being a private investigating
company, and charging the rich people, because
they will probably have to help some rich people
and there are bills to pay, and she would charge
a flat rate for her secretarial services... she
askes Angel to pass her a box... he hesitates
then picks up the box and passes it to her.
