(episode
written by David Fury and Jeannine Renshaw,
directed by James A. Contner)
Angel
has gone to the Oracles to get their help in
bringing Doyle back. They refuse. They tell Angel
that 'Doyle died so that he may live, and he
lives so that others may' and 'for every door
that closes another one opens'. Angel isn't
happy, but if they won't help there is nothing
more he can do.
It's
daylight. A demon, almost human except for the
horns, is being chased down an alley. His pursuer
is on a motorbike and clad in black leather.
Cordelia
is examining the cups at the office, Angel
enquires what she's looking for. She is looking
for Doyle's special cup, but he didn't have a
special cup, though he should have had a special
cup. It's as if he never existed, there's nothing
tangible left of him. Angel tells Cordelia to get
out. To take the day off. She refuses, saying
it's Angel's way of getting her out of the way so
that he can brood or something, then her bleeper
goes off and she grabs her bag and heads for the
door. She's got an audition for an advert. When
she opens the door to leave she is taken aback by
the presence of a horned demon in the doorway.
It's the demon who was being chased earlier. He
says he can sense her anxiety for the audition,
he's an empath demon, and tells her to imagine
all the people.... she cuts in with 'in their
underwear', he says no, imagine they are dead.
With that Cordelia leaves.
The
demon asks Angel for help. His name's Barney and
he points out to Angel that he's not exactly
human, and then enquires why Angel isn't in his
coffin, and it's the middle of the afternoon,
don't Vampires sleep during the day? Angel gives
him a brief lecture on the fact that Vampires can
go out and about during the day, so long as they
avoid direct sunlight.
Cordelia
is going through her audition, she's finding it
hard to fight back the tears. She's auditioning
for a 'Stain-be-gone' commercial. The panel ask
her to run through it again, this time a little
more upbeat. Cordelia jumps up and down a couple
of times to calm herself and tries again. Part
way through the patter she gets a vision, it's
not clear, and very painful. When the vision ends
she spurts out some of the words from the advert
patter 'grass stains!' The panel comment that
it's an interesting angle and call for the next
candidate.
....The
'Mad Dog' motorbike is cruising around LA.
Barney
explains that he's being hunted by this
unstoppable demon hunter. He can't seem to shake
him. He's been following him since Pheonix. He
says it's a miracle he's survivied this long.
....The
motorbike stops, the rider dismounts the machine.
He opens a bag on the back of the bike and
removes some weapons.
Angel
is curious why Barney is being hunted, there must
be some reason. Barney confesses that he does
sometimes use his empathy to cheat at cards, but
he's not evil or anything.
....The
biker checks some 'yellow goo' on the corner of a
wall.
Cordelia
gets back to the office, and is not in a very
good mood. She goes over to Angel and kisses him.
He pushes her off, a little confused. She says
she didn't feel anything. Angel is still
confused. She then comments about the PTB's
staying out of her head, and says the 'stupid
vision' ruined her audition. Angel is less
confused. He asks her what it was. She starts to
explain about the audition, but Angel meant the
vision, what was the vision. Cordelia says it was
an 'ugly grey blobby thing'. She says she will
smooch every damn frog in the kingdom... just as
Barney walks in... she kisses Barney, than takes
a beat, maybe not *every* frog. Angel tells
Cordelia to draw the grey blobby thing, it must
be important. He leaves Barney and Cordelia at
the offices whilst he goes to check Barney's
apartment.
Inside
the apartment block it's dingy, the lights
flickering. Angel heads towards Barney's
apartment. Someone, the biker, is climbing the
stairs, not far behind Angel. A maid comes out of
the room opposite Barney's, making Angel start a
little. There is someone at the end of the
corridor just around the corner with a crossbow,
Angel doesn't seem to notice. Angel opens the
door to Barney's apartment and is pushed inside
by someone. The biker, clad all in black, with
crossbow raised, moves forward out of the
shadows.
[Wesley]
- Hello Angel.
[Angel] - Wesley?
[Wesley] - I'll wager you never thought you'd see
me again?
[Angel] - Actually I never gave it any
thought.....
[Wesley] - ah ba ba, I'm the one who'll do the
talking. I should warn you that any sudden
movements and I'll be forced to.....
In
one swift move Angel knocks the crossbow from his
hand. He makes a sarcastic comment on Wesley's
'new look', obviously amused at the ex-Watchers
new guise. Wesley explains that he is a 'Rogue
Demon Hunter' now, with emphasis on the 'Rogue'.
Angel jokes 'easy tiger'. Wesley's attempts to
come across macho don't really work, he tries to
put one foot up on the edge of the bed, but the
matress gives way and his foot falls to the
floor. He moves over to the chest of draws and
rests his elbow on top. He tells Angel that he
has been tracking a demon that has 'cut a swathe'
across America. It's collecting 'powers'. A drop
of yellowy viscous fluid lands on Wesley's
shoulder, he doesn't notice. He mentions to Angel
that the demon seems to be secreting something.
Angel has noticed the drop on Wesley's shoulder
and comments if it's the same stuff. Wesley gets
out of the way barely in time as a demon drops
from the ceiling. Angel and Wesley fight the
demon with Wesley eventually reclaiming his
crossbow and getting a shot in. It gets the demon
in the arm and it jumps out of the window and
runs off.
Barney
is watching Cordelia try to draw the 'grey blobby
thing'. He comments on her grief, and she rebukes
him for prying. Cordy does tell him about Doyle.
Angel
returns to the offices with Wesley in tow. Barney
recognises him as the guy who's been hunting him
and he makes a dash for it. Angel tells Wesley
where the books are as he heads off after Barney.
Wesley recognises Cordelia, but before he can say
anything more than her name she kisses him. She
steps back slightly and comments that it didn't
work. Wesley says he thought it went better than
last time, then Cordelia finally recognises him.
He explains that he's a 'rogue demon hunter' now,
and Cordy ask's what a 'rogue demon' is... Wesley
goes in search of the books to identify the demon
that attacked them. When Angel returns with
Barney, Wesley has a book and has found the
demon. A Kungai demon, of asiatic origin. They
have a 'tack horn' than can drain the life from
their enemies. Barney say's he's heard of them,
and that they are very dangerous. Wesley comments
that he'd tracked it through an asian district
not far from there. Angel goes to take the book
from Wesley, but Wesley won't let him have it.
Angel say's he'll go and search 'china town' to
see if he can find the demon, Wesley say's he'll
go along, but Angel says no, he works alone, he
had a sidekick, he's now dead, so he works alone.
Angel leaves. Wesley goes to sit on the stairs,
but winces as he crouches down, and decides to
stand up again. Cordelia asks if he's alright. He
says the leather pants chaife.....
Angel
makes some enquiries at a Lotus Spa in China
Town. The Kungai is out back. Angel goes through
and starts to look for him, checking the
curtained changing cubicles along each side. One
of the curtains pulls back and a demon asks Angel
if he knows where they do the shiatsu massages.
Angel ignores him and carries on his search.
Barney
and Cordelia are alone again. He asks her what
she's trying to draw. She tells him about the
visions, how she got them from Doyle. She also
mentions that Doyle didn't leave anything behind,
no posessions, no nothing...Barney suggests that
Doyle gave her the most valuable possession he
had....
Angel
finds the Kungai, he's dying, someone's removed
his tack horn...
Barney
phones an associate, Hank, whilst Cordelia makes
some coffee. He tells Hank he's got the Kungai
horn, but he may have something better.... he
pulls the electric cable from a lamp and hides it
behind his back. He returns to Cordelia and
starts to belittle her. She tries to leave but he
stops her, he pushes her over onto the table...
The
Kungai tries to tell Angel something, but he
doesn't speak the language, he can't understand.
Wesley enters the room. He's changed into a cream
suit and followed Angel into China Town. He
should be able to translate what the Kungai is
trying to tell them...
Barney
ties up Cordelia with the cable...
[Kungai]
- Klu ~ Kar
[Wesley] - more will die?
Cordelia
fakes a vision and knees Barney. She runs for the
stairs, her hands still tied behind her, Barney
catches her and knocks her out.
[Wesley]
- demon?.. heart?.. reader?
Angel
realises what 'demon heart reader' means. Barney.
The empath demon. Barney took the Kungai's tack
horn. And he's alone with Cordelia....
Cordelia
comes round, she's tied up and gagged. She sees
the 'grey blobby thing' on the wall, it's some
sort of sculpture. There's other bits in the
room, body bits, hearts, brains, eyes, horns....
Angel
and Wes return to the offices, but no Cordelia.
There are signs of a struggle, Angel starts to
look for clues. Wesley sits down, blaming
himself, he calls himself a fraud. Angel comments
about looking for clues, but Wesley doesn't
notice. Angel finds a screwed up piece of paper,
it's the picture of the 'grey blobby thing'
Cordelia was drawing. Angel recognises it as a
sculpture called the 'maiden with urn'. Find the
sculpture, find Cordelia. While Angel searches
the internet to find where the sculpture is,
Wesley tries to translate 'Klu~Kar'. Angel
finally finds the sculpture, a chain of hotels
owns it, but which hotel is it in? Wesley manages
to get a translate on 'Klu~kar' but it's not much
help, it means 'caller sale'. Wesley ponders what
'caller sale' could mean as he tapes a knife to
his calf. Then it comes to him, auction, caller
sale means auction. Now to find which one of the
hotels is running some autions.
Cordelia
is brought onto the auction stage. Most of the
bidders are demons. She tries to keep the bidding
going, saying she's got 20-20 eyes as it is, and
with the visions she can see buried treasure and
stuff. Two demons are bidding for her and she
plays them off each other, eventually one of them
snaps the others neck. Another bidder joins in,
and suited lady bidding on behalf of someone on
the other end of her phone. She out bids the
demon and Cordelia is sold for $30,000. In the
back room of the auction the suited lady states
that her client only wants the eyes. They haggle
briefly and Barney agrees. Hank wants to be the
one to remove her eyes but Barney say's no, he's
the boss, he takes the extractors.
Angel
and Wesley arrive at the hotel and ask a member
of staff where the auction is. He say's there are
no auctions. Angel vamps out and the guy points
them in the direction of the auction rooms.
Cordelia
is struggling to stop them extracting her eyes.
Angel and Wes enter the back room, sending some
of the security men flying. Barney says to grab
wooden stakes and they start to fight. The suited
lady leaves, phoning her bosses and advising them
that Angel had interrupted. Wesley is struggling
to get the knife detached from his leg, and
inadvertantley trips up one of the assailents.
Angel tells Wes to untie Cordy. He eventually
gives up on the knife and grabs a sharp edged
horn to cut through the ropes. Barney then
attacks Wesley and they start to fight.
[Wesley]
- Butcher an innocent girl would you?! I'm going
to thrash you to within an inch of your life,
then I'm gonna take that inch!!
Barney
gets the upper hand in the fight, but Cordelia
grabs the tack horn and stabs it into Barneys
back. He rolls off Wesley and makes a few last
convulsions for life, he falls onto his front and
disintigrates....
Cordelia
irons out the picture of the 'grey blobby thing'
and puts it into a frame. Wes starts to say his
goodbyes, but hovers. Angel then offers him
breakfast, scrambled eggs and toast, and Wes
quickley accepts. Angel serves up breakfast.....
