A4 Teachers Pet

(episode written by David Greenwalt, directed by Bruce Seth Green)

Buffy is fighting a vampire at the bronze, in a silky red dress. She is outmatched, and is pinned against the pool table. Xander intervenes and knocks the vampire to the ground. Buffy is gratefull, she looks up into his eyes, then notices his hand is hurt. The vampire gets up, and Xander promptly 'dusts' him. He goes up onto the stage and picks up a guitar, and starts to strum. Buffy looks up at him longingly from the front of the crowd. Then she tells him he's dribbling.....

... Buffy nudges Xander, who has drifted off into dreamland, and points out he's dribbling. They are in their science lesson. Dr Gregory is teaching them about insects. He notices Buffy talk to Xander and goes over to her. He points out that if she's done her homework she should be able to answer his next question. He has his back to Xander and Willow. He asks Buffy how 'ants' communicate. Willow starts to touch Xanders back, stroke it. Buffy says 'Touch?', but there is another. Willow starts to 'sniff' Xanders back. Buffy is confused, she answers 'meuw?'. The class laugh... Dr Gregory asks Buffy to remain behind at the end of the lesson. Instead of the 'lost cause' lecture that she is expecting, Dr Gregory tells her that she is obviously intelligent, and definately a quick thinker, if she actually made the effort to apply herself she could do extremely well in science. He expects nothing less. Buffy is pleased that a teacher is seeing something positive in her, and promises to work harder. She leaves. Dr Gregory changes his glasses and goes over to a 'negatives table' to look at some slides. A claw reaches around his neck and his glasses fall to the ground...

Xander is prowling at the Bronze, but without much luck. He heads over to the bar, where a couple of other High School students are sat. They are discussing their 'scores'. Xander is brought into the conversation, and he says 'this week or this month?'. They don't believe him, but Buffy and Willow walk in just at that moment. Xander makes a comment to the guys and heads over to the girls and puts his arms around them. He tells them his manliness is being questioned so Willow gives him a big hug. Buffy notices someone across the Bronze, it's Angel. She ignores Xander and heads over to him. Xander is not happy, this Angel guy is 'buff', Buffy never said he was 'buff'. Angel thinks Buffy looks cold so gives her his leather jacket. She notices an injury to his arm. He warns her about a vampire who is in town, he calls him 'fork guy'. He's dangerous, Buffy should be carefull. He leaves.

At school the following day they discover that Dr Gregory is missing. They are sitting outside, near the front entrance. The substitute teacher catches Xanders attention very quickly. She is a 'hottie', and all the boys seem very drawn to her. She asks Xander where the science labs are, but in his distracted state he can't remember. One of the boys who had been questioning Xanders manliness at the Bronze comes over and offers to show Miss French to the labs. Blayne points out that he's played varsity football, and Miss French goes off with him into the school. In the science lesson Miss French starts to teach the class about the Praying Mantis. Buffy says they are 'bug ugly', but Miss French doesn't agree. She thinks they are wonderful fascinating creatures. She asks for volunteers to help make some papier mache 'egg sacks' as a project, and all of the boys immediately volunteer. Blayne gets the number one slot, and Xander is to be second.

They are discussing Miss French in the queue at lunch. Blayne tries to rub it in that he is first, but Xander turns it around to say that Blayne is the practice run. Cordelia comes passed and goes over to the fridge. She tells one of the kitchen ladies that a special meal should have been delivered, from her dietician, and promptly opens the large fridge door. She screams. Buffy, Willow and Xander instinctively go over to see what's there. It's Dr Gregory, minus his head...

... Giles gives Buffy a glass of water as she sits on the library stairs. Dr Gregory was her favourite teacher, he was a nice teacher, who could do this? They discuss some possibilities, and Giles does some more research on the 'fork guy'. They conclude that the beheading is not the 'fork guys' m.o. so guess that another evil must be at work. In the meantime, Giles suggests that Buffy is carefull out on patrol, and stays away from the park where a 'shredded' homeless guy was found.

Buffy goes to the park to find the 'fork guy'. She needs to take her 'grief' out on someone, so it might aswell be him. She eventually finds his lair and he comes out at her. She fends him off, and they fight. Before one can get the upper hand on the other the police arrive, just out of sight. The 'fork guy' runs for it, and so does Buffy. He jumps over the fence that surrounds the park and approaches a woman carrying some shopping, it's Miss French. Buffy gets to the fence to see Miss French turn around to face the vampire, he hisses and runs for the nearest drain cover and disappears underground.

Buffy reports in to Giles the following morning. He is not happy about her going to the park, but they have more important things to deal with. Whatever could Miss French be that an evil vampire was actually scared of her. Buffy is late for class, so they leave it at that for now. On her way to the labs she crosses paths with Principle Flutie. Everyone who witnessed the body in the fridge has to have counselling, no exeptions. By the time Buffy gets to class they are all well into a test. As Buffy looks through the glass in the door Miss French turns her head 180 degrees to look at her.... Buffy heads back to the library and starts some research. What can turn it's head 180 degrees. She starts with insects. After she has head into the stacks she comes out again and asks Giles where that section is... They discover that Blayne has been reported missing by his parents, that he never came home last night after his extra curricular project work with Miss French. Buffy discovers one creature that can turn it's head around 180 degress, the Praying Mantis. When Buffy declares Miss French to be a giant Praying Mantis it trigures off a memory of Giles, back when he was at college. One of his friends had studied Entomology (insects) and fairy tales. Giles makes some phone calls and manages to get in touch with his old friend, who is now in a mental home. He had discovered a creature that could make you see what you wanted to see, like a person, when in fact they weren't. The creature he had hunted was a large Praying Mantis... Buffy tries to warn Xander about staying away from Miss French, but he won't listen.

Xander goes over to Miss French's house to work on the project. When he gets there she is wearing a little black dress and gives him a martini. He starts to lose consciousness.... When he wakes up he is in a cage in her basement, with a very frightened Blayne in the next cage. He has seen what is destined to happen to them if they can't escape. Xander manages to free one of the bars between the two cages. Blayne is pleased at first, then realises neither can escape. Xander points out that the bar will make a usefull weapon. Blayne climbs through into Xanders cage, and they both sit at the back awaiting their fate.

When the gang check on Xander, they are told he has gone to his teachers house to study, but his parents don't know the address. Willow looks up the files on the computer and gets the address for Miss French. Giles is sent out to the video archives to get a tape recording of bat sonar, while Buffy gets tooled up. With everything gathered together the posse head out to rescue their friend.

Miss French starts to 'eeny meeny miny moe', to pick her next mate. She picks Xander. He reluctantly leaves the cage, then attacks her with the bar and dashes for the stairs. She catches his leg and pulls him back...

When the gang get to Miss French's house all they find is an old lady. It's the wrong house, sort of. It is Miss French, but not their Miss French, she has stolen her identity. Buffy comes up with an idea to help find out which house she's living in, it's got to be that neighbourhood because that's where she saw her with her shopping. Buffy manages to find the 'fork handed' vampire and ties him up. She forces him to head along the road with them and he suddenly becomes agitated. Thats the house. The vampire gets free form the ropes and attacks Buffy. After a brief scuffle she manages to slay him.

Xander is tied up and Miss French is getting closer. Buffy and the others come in through the side window and Buffy sprays insect repellant at Miss French. She backs away. Xander is freed and Buffy asks Giles to play the bat sonar. When he switches it on, the tape is on the wrong side. There is a scuffle and Giles drops the tape machine. He eventually recovers it and switches on the bat sonar. Miss french is disorientated and Buffy goes to work discecting her with a machette. When Buffy is finished Xander takes the machette from Buffy and starts to attack the egg sacks...

...inside the science lab cupboard is a sack of eggs.......
