Mr Giles is
English, and Oxford educated, and was
assigned to the US, giving up a career as
a museum curator, to become Buffy's
Watcher. He initially wanted to be a
fighter pilot, or maybe a grocer. Now in
his early forties he was a rebellious
youth (at one point summoning a demon -
oops) but he finally settled and accepted
his destiny. He had studied and trained
to be a Watcher from a young age, as did
his father before him, and his
grandmother before that.

Season One
Rupert Giles
takes up the role of High School Librarian in
order to become Buffy's Watcher. He is a little
taken aback by her negative reaction to
discovering him as her new Watcher but
persaveres. Giles gradually grows fond of Buffy,
in a father/daughter way. Although her methods,
and the fact that she aquires a gang of friends
to help, are a little unusual, she proves to be a
very effective Slayer. Giles comes across as a
stuffy tweed wearing librarian book nerd guy, but
does evolve a little. When a prophecy is
uncovered fortelling Buffy's death, Giles decides
to take on the Master himself, to protect Buffy.
She see's things differently and knocks him out.
Season Two
With Buffy
back from her vacation in LA, it's slaying
business as usual. Giles begins to develope a
relationship with the computer sciences teacher,
Jenny Calender, but problems ensue when an old
friend of Giles', Ethan Rayne, turns up in
Sunnydale bent on reeking havoc. Details of
Giles' rebelious past eventually come out, and
Jenny is temporarily possessed by the demon,
Eyghon, whom he'd summoned back in his youth.
They eventually get back together, only to fall
out again when Angel loses his soul, after it is
discovered she was in Sunnydale to watch Angel on
behalf of her Gypsy relatives. When Jenny manages
to discover the curse needed to restore Angel's
soul he kills her and leaves her in Giles' bed. A
highly emotional Giles heads out to Angels lair
to kill him, and has to be rescued by Buffy. He
is eventually kidnapped and tortured by Angel in
order to discover the secret of how to open the
gates to Hell through the demon Acathla. Drusilla
tricks him into telling them what they need by
pretending to be Jenny. He is rescued by Buffy
and Xander, but there is no sign of Buffy for the
rest of the summer.
Season Three
After flying
here, there and everywhere looking for Buffy, she
finally decides to come home, much to Giles'
relief. He is the only who is not openly angry
with her for running away. With Joyce now aware
of her daughters destiny, she and Giles gradually
work together as a team to monitor Buffy's
activities. Under the influence of cursed
chocolate, which involves old advisary Ethan
Rayne, Giles and Joyce go on a jaunt around
Sunnydale, acting like teenagers, culminating
with them making out twice on the bonnet of a
police car. Don't ask where the Officer was, or
how they came to aquire his gun and cuffs! Things
take a turn for the worse during a rite of
passage ritual that all Slayers must face on
their Eighteenth birthday. Buffy manages to pass
the test, but Giles does not and is fired from
his role as Buffy's Watcher. On top of that a new
second Slayer has arrived in Sunnydale, and is
slowly spiraling out of control, and Angel has
returned from Hell. The new Watcher, Wesley
Wyndham-Price, is coldly recieved, and Buffy
continues to favour Giles. The second Slayer,
Faith, continues to spiral, and the Mayor has big
plans for Graduation Day. Giles sticks steadfast
and loyal to Buffy, resulting in him blowing up
the High School on Graduation Day to save the
Class of 99 and Sunnydale from the newly Ascended
Mayor.
Season Four
Giles is now
out of a job, and Buffy is gaining her
independence at college. With both Giles and
Buffy no longer working for the Council of
Watchers, Giles decides to have a go at having a
life. He does continue to help Buffy and the
gang, but also entertains an old friend, Olivia,
who just happened to be in the area, and takes up
a job singing rock ballads in the local coffee
shop. The beginning of the dreaded 'mid life
crisis'? Giles aquires an unusual new 'friend' in
the form of a 'neutered' vampire, old advisary
Spike. His clothes also get the casual treatment.
After a few hiccups, including the return of
Ethan Rayne who decides it might be fun to turn
Giles into a Fyaral demon, he sticks to his
steadfast loyalty to Buffy and helps her to
defeat a military experiment gone wrong.
